Well said. I am, in fact, trying to enjoy my music more and worry less about re-sampling and dithering and 24-bit playback etc. These things do make the music sound better but only up to a certain point. After that you start entering purist territory, getting diminishing returns and doing things just to make you feel better.

Well-explained and well-written, too! Yet things got even better since you wrote this:
* Winamp 5.3 sounds nicer than older versions (it needs an update pack from Winamp to fix a small bug; newer releases won’t need that).
* 24 bits per sample deliver yet another improvement (just enable that option on the “play” tab of Winamp options).

Indeed, great sound doesn’t have to be expensive:
* Many expensive soundcards can’t play 44.1kHz data directly; some cheaper ones (like the ChainTech AV-710, $25) do.
* Digital (SPDIF) connection is _the_ way to feed home theater systems; cheap optical cables work just fine here.

A most excellent guide here. I’m running a Dell with on-board (SoundMax) sound, playing 192vbr mp3 through some good altec lansing speakers. I also use izotope (highly recommend), I used to use Enhancer. I change to MAD encoder (didn’t here much difference). I change to Kernel streaming and everything seemed more punchier and clearer. I had to turn the bass & treble settings on the speakers down one notch. Sounds great. The info you detailed is available if you do enough searching but it is scattered about the net. Having it all here is a great service. Thanks.

I listen music using winamp on my “old” pc. I have more than 160Gb music, mostly Lossless (Flac, Shn, Ape etc.). I use a Soundblaster Audigy LS soundcard, an external stereo Hi-Fi amplifier (CambridgeAudio A640) and 2 B&W DM 2000 loudspeakers (really magical!).
I want to thank you for “kernel killer!” . Sound, especially on middle-high frequencies is now very clear and detailled.
Thanks for your suggestion, really….what i was looking for!
