How to make your blog popular?

Filed under: Opinions — Manish Bansal @ 1:53 pm

65% of new blogs created are abandoned within a month of the first post. And less than 20% of the blogs are updated regularly, if at all. One of the reason people abandon their blog is low number of hits. How can you motivate yourself to write when no one other than you is going to read it? Another common reason is lack of time or work pressure. Some people quit because they don’t see any point in blogging once the novelty wears off. Well, assuming that you have decided to go ahead and keep at it, here are some points to help you along.

  1. Know why you blog: Some people blog ’cause they just want to rant and get the load off their chest. Some blog to create a repository of their knowledge which they can refer to later. Some write about their experiences from which others can hopefully learn and avoid making those same mistakes. For some it’s a weapon to fight boredom. So before you start blogging, know your type. I started blogging to learn new things. I have to do a lot of research before I can post “How to” type of posts.
  2. Write from the heart: People come to your blog to read about a real person. They want to get to know the raw you, not some stuff PR laundered stuff. Be direct and write in first person. People want to see your emotional core, the person they would see if all the gurads were down.
  3. Be original: Give others a reason to come to your blog. Make their time and effort worthwhile. Don’t just link to others’ posts and don’t say what has been said thousand times before. If you don’t have anything to say, keep quiet.
  4. Give and take: If you want others to come to your blog, you have to go to their blog! And let them know that you’d been there. Best way to do that is to leave a comment. Don’t just say ‘nice blog’ etc. Write something creative so that other person feels like checking out your blog. Leaving a good comment can make any blogger’s day.
  5. It takes time: You are not going to become Robert Scoble in a day. Be patient. It takes time and a lot of it. Just keep writing. It took me about 6 months before my site was the first hit on Google for my name.
  6. Be consistent: I like blogs which get updated regularly. You don’t have to bang out a post everyday but maintain a consistent frequency. Strive for atleast 2-3 posts a week. See #3.

Popular or not, writing a blog is its own reward. Atleast you can tell yourself that till you start getting a million hits a day.

  1. Write from the heart: When I started bloging I didnt know that anyone can even read
my posts but I have written posts just becoz I like to write a diary (so I found the
electronic diary to write about what I feel). That makes all my post real. I think
ppl visit my blog only becoz of being real, as I strongly know that my writing
skills are not so good but still I get comments on my blog. I believe “Write from
the heart” really matters a lot.

Give and Take: Yes, when I get a comment from someone, I really feel to check
his blog to know about him. Its all very natural tendancy. I dont check their
site expecting that they will also check mine. I dont go much on Stats of number
of hits but I do like getting good comments and replying to them.

(Nice Post OOPs I forgot what you written “Don’t just say ‘nice blog’ etc” ;)

  3. Thanks for posting those tips, I have my blog from like 1 week and I have some comments by my blogging friend and the stats show I get like 50 unique hits each reset on IndianBloggers, and my blog is ranked 5th there in the Computers section but I get no comments and also I think I am the only onw who really reads my posst! What should I do?

  4. Hi Falak, there are two ways of looking at how popular your blog is - number of hits and number of comments. If you get lot of hits but not many comments, you are still ok. Most people read too many blogs to have time to write comments. I personally subscribe to more than 100 blogs in my bloglines account. So don’t worry about not getting comments. A lot of hits are just fine as well.

  5. Hi Falak, I dont know why whenever I go to your blog and try to open any post,
    it says “Page Not found”

Manish did you get a chance to check his post on the blog.

  6. Hi Nidhi, I did go to his blog and it was opening fine for me here. Try going to ‘http://backdoorguardian.wordpress.com/’. He has mapped his wordpress blog to his own domain name.

  7. Thanks Manish, it worked.

  8. Firstly, thanks for linking back to my blog on your blogroll - I really appreciate it. I often wonder who bothered reading the nonsense I spend half my life mentally composing, and the other half trying to remember what I just mentally composed.

Secondly, great advice on blogging - it can sometimes feel a bit like pushing rocks uphill when searing inciteful comment appears to gather few readers and fewer comments, but then, as you say, the very act of blogging is actually rewarding enough in terms of learning, honing writing skills and getting stuff off your chest.

Thirdly, a thorny problem you might be able to assist with. How can I get MiniDV camcorder footage off the tapes and onto to my iMac? I keep scouring forums from techies who seem to know such things, but noone gives a straight answer, there´s just lots of shoulders being shrugged (as far as you can tell by reading an email) and lots of confusing acronyms assuming a knowledge on behalf of the reader that I don´t possess - I don´t have the patience to read instructions you see, I just sort of jump on in, then slowly, over time, fill in the gaps with targetted reference to help pages and instruction manuals.

  9. That should have read “insightful”, not “inciteful”.

    Comment by MrZhisou — March 1, 2006 @ 10:47 am

  10. Hi Zhisou, Thanks for your comments. What else a blogger lives for? I also enjoy reading your blog. I was planning to watch the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha” but now I am thinking of picking up the novel after reading your recommendation.
I had tried copying the tapes off MiniDV camcorder (Sony) on my iBook once and it had worked fine. I just opened iMovie and it recognized the camcorder and offered to copy the tape on to iBook. You would have to connect the camcorder thru firewire cable though. USB won’t work. Let me know if this does not work. Also it would be helpful if you could tell me excatly what error message you are getting.

  11. There’s some interesting points that are covered in your post. It sure does take some time to gain popularity, I do agree with that!
I’ve also seen some interesting articles from you, which I’ll go and read now! :)

  12. The “give and take” tip is so true. Thats a great way to get some attention. How else will people know about your site. It takes a lot of effort to gain some popularity and if you’re consistent with it then eventually you will get something out of it. And ofcourse originality is extremely important!

    Comment by Tanjina — March 24, 2007 @ 6:34 pm

  13. Well guys a nice 6 pointer article which can explain drawing internet traffic to your site. What I would like to know is how to pull peoples to your blog or site and keep them tied. I would like know how to take yourself in someone’s shoe and find where it is pinching or where it is comfortable. If you have any tips, tricks advices regarding the same I would highly appreciate.

Besides you have not mentioned anything about earning from a blog. Of course a guy who is there to blog only for learning will not think about earning because it serves his purpose. But other peoples would like to know making bugs from the hard work that they are/will be putting in.

  14. I do not think you can make money from your blog until you are doing it fulltime AND you have a ton of original content. Anyway, I never thought of making money from my blog so I can’t really say much on this topic.

  22. Hello,
I just started my blog this week, even though I have been viewing blogs actively for quite some time now. I have always loved writing, and this year, I finally promised myself that I would begin a blog, and voila, so I have! Now, I am visting new blogs I had not visited before to get a better feel, as well as hopefully increase my ranking! So, I am here now reading your advice, and your visitors’ comments, and I like them! It feels odd, but uplifting to belong the blog community now. Everytime someone now talks of bloggers, my ears will prick up even more than ever before as I can now safely assume I belong to this special group of innovative writers, or so I tell myself I am :-). Again thanks, and if you or anyone else would like to visit my blog, I would be thrilled!

  23. Great tips!!! If you’re talking about “know why you blog”… I guess its just simply because I like to talk… and when I just didn’t feel any satisfaction by just telling the person I know in real life… so I go online… XD

Now I hope more and more “you-dont-know-me-I-dont-know-you” will come and listen to what I crap in my blog… and finally become “you-like-me-and-i-like-you”…

Sorry for crapping here… anyway… Thanks a lot for your tips… AGAIN!!! Muahahaha!!!

  25. Thanks for your tips, they look very useful. I have created recently a blog and yes, no one has seen it yet but I’m looking forward to make it popular.
There is one thing I would like to be adviced into: how about the language? I mean my native language is spanish but I can read/write in english as well so, how can someone make a blog bilingual? I guess this feature would expand my blog’s potential, don’t you agree?
    Well, thanks again anyway.
    Regards.
